I was initiated into this practice by my teachers and guides, Mariu Eugenia Gobbato and Doña Dominga in San Marcos La Laguna, Atitlán as well as the abuelas in my own family.
My teachers always say “We are not healers, but rather a channel for this healing”. I view being a channel of this healing modality as a humbling gift. It is my heart work. I cannot wait to share this gift with you.

Details
What does the massage entail?
◖Before the massage, we talk about your most recent cycle (if applicable), how you are feeling energetically, emotionally, and physically, and set an intention for the session.
◖This massage, while focused on the belly, ties in the whole body. I begin with the back and hips, then proceed to the head, neck, and chest. The treatment finishes with focused work over the abdomen and womb space. This is so the body can fully relax prior to the deep work on the belly.
◖Following the massage of the abdomen, I will wrap your midsection in a long strip of woven fabric called la faja. This helps to keep the abdomen and womb secure, warm, and protect your energy following the massage.
◖After the massage, we will have a few moments to talk about your experience, if you wish.
Are there any contraindications?
This massage is contraindicated:
◖During the first few days of heavy bleeding during the menstrual cycle
***NOTE: When an IUD is present, we will not work as deeply around the uterus.
Is this massage just for the postpartum?
No, this massage is wonderful to support any moment of transition in life. Whether that’s following a birth, a menstrual cycle, a loss, a change in career or relationship, or any time when physical processing can be supportive. This massage has been used for thousands of years in Central America to support a range of ailments affecting abdominal as well as spiritual and emotional health on all bodies.
◖The midwives I studied with in Guatemala are doing amazing work to organize future generations of Indigenous midwives and sobadoras. Here is a link to learn more about their work and support them.
